Electron

fundamentals

An electron is a tiny subatomic particle that carries a negative electrical charge and orbits the nucleus of an atom. In conductors like copper, outer electrons are loosely bound and can move freely from atom to atom — these “free electrons” are what enable electric current. When billions of electrons flow in the same direction through a wire, that coordinated movement is what we call electricity.
