Ground

Ground is the reference point in a circuit defined as zero volts. Earth ground is a physical connection to the planet (via a metal rod or pipe) that provides a safe path for fault current. Circuit ground is simply the agreed-upon zero-volt reference inside a device. In household wiring, the green or bare-copper ground wire connects metal enclosures to earth ground so that a fault trips the breaker instead of shocking a person.
