Short Circuit

A short circuit is an unintended low-resistance path that allows current to bypass the normal load. Because resistance is nearly zero, an extremely large current flows, generating dangerous heat that can melt wires and start fires. Fuses and circuit breakers are designed to detect this condition and cut power before damage occurs.
